The safety of your family is our mission

Crash rig

Crash rig

Our crash rig was founded in Gumbo, Sipoo in 1989 and has since been a leading testing facility for prototypes of R16 seat belts and R44 child car seats. With approximately 50–80 tests per year, we have established ourselves as a reliable partner for safety testing.

Certification and Development

Before the track was certified, our certification tests for child car seats were conducted in Sweden at VTI and in England at BSI. For seat belts, the tests were conducted in the Netherlands at TNO.

Upon moving to the current premises in Vantaa, the track was extended by 10 meters and approved by VTT for testing within the standards R16 and R44.

 What We Do Today

Today, we primarily focus on prototype testing and annual COP tests for R16 seat belts, but we also conduct tests according to other standards. Some of the tests we have conducted in recent years include:

  • Car body tests according to R17: Testing the strength and attachment of the seat.
  • Stretcher tests according to EN-7089: Safety tests for stretchers.
  • Details for train tests according to AV/ST9001: Testing the durability of train parts.
  • Seat belts for dogs in cars: Without specific standards.

Our Testing Method

At the crash rig, we conduct dynamic tests by tensioning the sled with 2 – 6 rubber bands along a 32-meter track. The sled is then released, and the rubber bands pull it back to the other end of the track, where it is braked by 2 – 4 polyurethane tubes, creating a braking effect from 6 G to 40 G. Each test is filmed with a high-speed camera, and we produce detailed reports with G-values, speed, and force values.

Our Equipment

We have access to two three-axis accelerometers and two force sensors for collecting crash data. Additionally, we have a family of crash test dummies according to R44 and R16 standards:

R44 (P-dummies):

  • Newborn: 3.4 kg (<60 cm)
  • 1.5 years old: 11 kg (75–87 cm)
  • 3 years old: 15 kg (87–105 cm)
  • 6 years old: 22 kg (105–135 cm)
  • 10 years old: 32 kg (>135 cm)

R16:

  • Adult NO10: 75 kg

Crash rigs Specifications

  • Max. weight of test object: 1,000 kg
  • Max. width of test object:
  • Max. length of test object:
  • Speed: 24–56 km/h
  • Braking effect: 6–40 G

Other Testing Equipment

We also have a tensile testing machine that can test material durability up to 100 kN. The machine can be programmed for various tensile testing programs and is used for calibration tests, supplier reviews, and prototype tests. We primarily test seat belts, buckles, and other seat belt components, along with arrival tests of components for our production.

The testing equipment also includes heating and cooling cabinets, salt exposure cabinets, and a UV cabinet. However, these are not calibrated for official tests.
